This is my great great great grandfather Thomas Barnes born 1827. I recently started a group for my family so we can share photos and stories about our ancestors. The more we started talking, the more we were able to link relatives together. This is as far back as we got, this is the man who started it all. When my mom was alive I remember her telling me about a photo I found of a women, and I ask her "Who is this lady, she looks nothing like us"? My mom said her name was Elizabeth, she was Cherokee Indian and married to Thomas Barnes your great great great grandfather, were part Indian.
This is where the value of portraits come in, without a printed portrait, you would never know what your ancestors looked like. I understand we live in a digital world but ask yourself this...In a 130 years would you be able to bring up a photo like this on your phone or computer?

I've heard stores ,that he had a 3rd grade education, lived of the land, and you couldn't cheat him out of a nickel . She was all ways in the garden, or kitchen. If the kid's stepped out of line an needed a swat. She used what was in her hand. Most of the time it was a butcher knife. Bet you only put your hands back once. LOL.
